Morocco Geography

Imouzzer Mountain

Located on the Northwest corner of the continent of Africa, with beach fronts along two large bodies of water — the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea — just a few miles south of Spain, Morocco is a great destination for travelers looking for some fun in the sun. Water sports, fishing, and other beachside activities are available year-round.

Inland, old Imperial Cities — such as Marrakesh and Fez — invite travelers to experience Arab culture and walk through medieval cities that have remained largely unchanged for a thousand years. The rural mountain areas in the Rif, Middle Atlas, High Atlas, and Anti-Atlas, are wonderful destinations for travelers looking to uncover the secrets of the Amazigh (often Berber) — the indigenous people of Morocco and are “must see” destinations for nature lovers. Beyond the mountains forming a spine through the middle of the country lies the great Sahara, where travelers can explore the desert and enjoy the unmatched quietude of this region.

Moroccan Culture

Travelers to Morocco are often culturally curious. Morocco is the most liberal Muslim country in the world and has played host to Europeans, North Americans, and other visitors looking to experience what its like being with an Islamic culture.

Morocco is much more than just Islam. There is a long history of Jewish culture, predating Islam by thousands of years, while the Amazigh are thought to have been animist in their beliefs… all of which has blended into a unique culture, as amazing as it is genuinely kind.

Artisans and craftsmen still create some of the most amazing carpets, pottery, ceramics, leatherwork, and so much more all by hand, as has been done throughout history. For designers, artists, and shoppers, it is heaven.

Moroccan Food

The cuisine of Morocco is often thought of as being one of the very finest in the world. In fact, the national dish, couscous, is now the most popular dish in France! You’ll find lots of seasonal dishes slow-cooked to perfection using an open flame and organic fruits, vegetables, and meats served alongside fresh-baked loaves of bread.

Though there are many vegetarian and vegan options, it is a traditionally meat-heavy diet. The coasts are rich with seafood, including some world-class oysters, while inland, lamb, chicken, goat, beef, and even camel are often served. Beyond the couscous and tajines, you’ll find regional specialities that will make any foodie smile with glee.

Moroccan Hospitality

The real charm of Morocco is found in its unmatched hospitality, a treasure that is woven deep through its cultural thread and encouraged in the local religion. The accommodations echo this hospitality, oozing charm and an oriental opulence at every turn. The well-appointed riads and dars found in the old cities, towering mountain kasbahs, and cosy bivouac “glamping” tents, provide the creature comforts travellers have come to expect while adding touches of luxury where possible and appropriate.

All of this adds up to a destination that truly has something to offer for every stripe of traveller.
